About

I’m Mark Bieda.
I am an assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Calgary. This means that I spend most of my time doing scientific research and some time teaching.

My primary research areas are bioinformatics and genomics.

In this blog, I’ll write about various things, but mostly science.

I’m going to write a fair amount about open source or free software for two reasons:

First, when checking out an open source tool, I find it very helpful to get information from the web (duh!).

Second, by giving some helpful hints, I am contributing, in a small way, to the community. Open source and free software goes beyond just getting the program. It is very important to be able to quickly and easily use the programs – and having hints from real users is key.
